Union Station to Crown Center in Rain: The Link and Indoor Options

Use the Link between Union Station and Crown Center with the right opening-hours checks, one indoor attraction and a practical bad-weather fallback.

The Link can help with a rainy Kansas City day, but it does not replace checking each venue's hours. Build the outing around one indoor attraction, then verify the connecting passage and your food stop. An enclosed connection being available does not mean every destination on the route is open.

Crown Center's hours page says the Link between the Westin and Sheraton is open, while the Westin–Union Station connection is limited to Union Station's open hours. It lists regular shopping hours as Monday–Saturday 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m.; public building access starts earlier. Attractions, restaurants and holidays can follow different schedules.

Use that distinction when a map suggests a convenient indoor route. Check the passage window, the destination entrance and the attraction's admission time separately. For an early breakfast or a late return, contact the relevant venue before relying on the same connection you used during the day.

Choose one indoor anchor

Decide whether your group wants an exhibition, a family activity or a simple meal and building visit. Look at Union Station's official attraction information and Crown Center's current listings, then check the selected experience's booking rules. The larger buildings contain separate experiences, not one admission that automatically covers everything.

A manageable structure is arrival, one booked attraction, a nearby meal if open, and an optional second stop. Leave the optional part unbooked when possible. If the first visit runs longer or the weather worsens, you can return without sacrificing another ticket.

Before leaving the hotel

  • Save your attraction booking and its actual entrance instructions.
  • Check the Link's availability for both your outward and return times.
  • Confirm the place you intend to eat is serving then.
  • Allow for arrival and departure outside the enclosed route.
  • Ask about elevators or an alternative route if stairs or long corridors are a concern.

“Mostly indoors” still leaves the trip from your hotel, parking space or transit stop. Carry what you need for that exposed part. Avoid assuming the passage is the shortest usable option for a wheelchair, stroller or visitor with limited stamina; ask staff about the route that suits your arrival point.

If the passage or attraction is unavailable

Pause before setting off for the next building. Ask staff about the current connection and alternatives. If the only workable option adds an outdoor transfer, decide whether the destination is worth that journey in the actual conditions. You can shorten the visit to one building and still have a useful rainy-day outing.

Train passengers should also separate the indoor route from luggage arrangements. Our Union Station before-check-in guide explains what to confirm before leaving bags anywhere. Families can pair the route check with a short Crown Center morning rather than filling an entire wet day with multiple admissions.

Indoor-route questions

Can I rely on the Link at any hour?

No. The Union Station connection is subject to that building's opening hours. Check the latest official guidance for the times you will actually travel.

Do shopping hours establish restaurant and attraction hours?

No. Verify the particular business or attraction. Public access to a building is also different from shops being open.
