A Monday plan and a Tuesday plan should start with different checks. Do not copy a weekend itinerary into your calendar and assume every museum will be open. Choose one confirmed indoor attraction first, then add food and a nearby optional stop around it.
The useful Monday-versus-Tuesday distinction
The Nelson-Atkins currently lists Monday hours of 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Its Thursday and Friday schedule extends to 9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday run 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Holiday closures can override those regular hours. Check the museum's official dates and hours before choosing your day.
That creates a practical decision for a Sunday-to-Wednesday trip: if this museum is a priority, investigate Monday availability before assigning it to Tuesday. A late arrival on Monday may leave too little time for a satisfying visit. Move another flexible activity rather than treating the last few minutes before closing as a full museum experience.
Build two versions of the day
| Part of day | Monday version | Tuesday version |
|---|---|---|
| First anchor | Nelson-Atkins if open on your date | A different attraction with confirmed Tuesday admission |
| Meal | A restaurant near that anchor with its own hours checked | A meal near the replacement attraction |
| Optional finish | A short nearby outdoor stop if conditions suit | A short stop that does not require another advance ticket |
For Tuesday, look at Union Station's official attraction listings and select a specific experience that interests your group. A building being open does not establish that every exhibition, theater or ticket counter is operating. Check the experience's calendar, entry time and last admission individually.
Make a five-line booking note
- Write the actual calendar date beside the weekday.
- Record the attraction's opening time and last entry separately.
- Check whether a timed reservation or exhibition ticket is required.
- Find a meal whose kitchen is open during your intended break.
- Choose one fallback that still works if weather or a closure changes the day.
Keep the ticket confirmation and official calendar link in the same note. Screenshots help when reception is poor, but recheck for notices before leaving the hotel. If two attractions have uncertain availability, resolve the more important one first rather than buying both and hoping the timing works.
Avoid spending the saved time on extra transfers
After you replace a closed attraction, rebuild the surrounding geography. Keeping lunch from the original itinerary can create an unnecessary cross-city trip. With children, limited walking stamina or a short business-trip break, one well-planned visit can be more useful than three rushed arrivals.

Common early-week questions
Can I visit the Nelson-Atkins on Tuesday?
Its regular schedule currently lists Tuesday as closed. Use the museum's official calendar for exceptions and choose another confirmed attraction for that day.
Should I buy every ticket before arriving?
Reserve the attraction that needs a particular slot. Leave optional stops flexible when the official admission policy permits it, especially on an arrival day.
